Our verdict

CeraVe's take on vitamin C leads with 10% pure L-ascorbic acid — the well-studied, most potent form — and backs it with the brand's signature ceramide-cholesterol-phytosphingosine complex, an addition most vitamin C serums skip entirely. That combination is the real selling point: L-ascorbic acid brightens and provides antioxidant protection, but it can also be drying and slightly irritating on its own, and here the ceramides work to offset that while supporting the barrier at the same time. Panthenol and sodium hyaluronate round out the hydration side. The formula does include alcohol denat, which helps the texture feel light and non-greasy but can be drying with regular use on already-dry or sensitive skin. As with any L-ascorbic acid serum, it's prone to oxidation — a shift to yellow or brown signals declining potency, so store it away from light and heat. Used in the morning under sunscreen, it's a well-thought-out, barrier-conscious way to get real L-ascorbic acid without the bare-bones formula many vitamin C serums ship with.

Frequently asked

What makes this vitamin C serum different from others?
Most vitamin C serums are just L-ascorbic acid, water and a stabilizer. This one adds CeraVe's ceramide-cholesterol-phytosphingosine barrier complex alongside 10% ascorbic acid, which helps offset the dryness and mild irritation pure L-ascorbic acid can cause while still delivering its well-documented brightening and antioxidant benefits.
Does the alcohol in this serum make it drying?
It can, especially with regular daily use on dry or sensitive skin. Alcohol denat gives the serum its light, fast-absorbing texture, but combined with 10% ascorbic acid it's worth easing in gradually if your skin is reactive, and pairing it with a good moisturizer.
When should I use vitamin C serum in my routine?
In the morning, after cleansing and before moisturizer and sunscreen. Vitamin C works as an antioxidant that complements — but doesn't replace — daily sunscreen, so pairing them is where it earns its keep.
What is the score based on?
The score comes from the same Pure Moonlight ingredient analyzer used across the whole site. It weighs safety, barrier support, acne and comedogenic risk, and active-ingredient strength, so this product's score is directly comparable to any ingredient page here.
