Behentrimonium Chloride
The mildest quaternary ammonium for hair — behentrimonium chloride conditions, reduces static charge, and eases combing. A milder and less irritating alternative to cetrimonium chloride for conditioner formulations.
What is it?
Behentrimonium Chloride (BTAC-2) — a long-chain quaternary ammonium salt (C22, behenic acid). Its cationic nature allows it to adsorb onto the negatively charged surface of hair and skin. The longer carbon chain (C22 vs. C16 in cetrimonium) provides a gentler action and better tolerance. Used in concentrations of 0.5–3% in conditioners, masks, and styling products.
A basic component of conditioners, balms, and hair masks. A softer and skin-safe alternative to cetrimonium chloride. Suitable for sensitive scalp and fine hair.

Main Actions
Cetrimonium chloride (C16) — more common and cheaper, but a stronger irritant. Behentrimonium chloride (C22) — more expensive, but gentler, with a better safety profile. Behentrimonium is more commonly found in premium conditioners. Both are effective conditioners, but behentrimonium is better tolerated by sensitive skin.
