Phytosphingosine

The skin barrier lipid — phytosphingosine is a natural precursor of ceramides and supports two important tasks: barrier comfort and microbiome balance. It is particularly interesting in formulas for skin that is simultaneously prone to dryness and breakouts.

What is it?

Phytosphingosine — a natural sphingoid lipid found in the upper layers of the skin and in yeast (Pichia ciferrii). In INCI: Phytosphingosine. It is a direct precursor of ceramide 3 (ceramide NP) in the metabolic chain of ceramide biosynthesis. It is also present in the skin microbiome and plays a role as a signaling molecule.

Barrier-repair and anti-acne supportive active in serums, creams, and products for problematic skin. Especially relevant in combination with ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids — such a system better mimics the natural lipid matrix.

Key Benefits

Precursor of ceramides and barrier support
Phytosphingosine is part of sphingolipid metabolism and can support the synthesis of ceramide NP and other ceramide fractions. In cosmetics, it works best alongside ready-made ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids.
Support for acne-prone skin
Has antimicrobial potential against Cutibacterium acnes (formerly P. acnes) and can reduce some inflammatory signals. This is an auxiliary mechanism in care, but not a substitute for benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, or dermatologist prescriptions.
Support for the skin microbiome
Phytosphingosine is part of the natural chemical signaling of the skin and can support microbiome balance. The practical effect depends on concentration, lipid base, and overall softness of the formula.

Auxiliary anti-acne component

Phytosphingosine is beneficial when acne-prone skin is simultaneously dry or has a compromised barrier. If there is active inflammatory acne, it is better considered as support for the barrier and microbiome, rather than as primary treatment.
