Our verdict

The Renewing SA Cleanser is CeraVe's attempt to smuggle a mild exfoliant into a barrier-friendly daily wash, and it mostly succeeds. It uses gentle surfactants (cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate) to cleanse without stripping, then layers in a low dose of salicylic acid and gluconolactone (a PHA) for light smoothing, plus niacinamide and the familiar CeraVe ceramide-cholesterol complex to keep the barrier intact. The honest framing matters here: because it is a rinse-off cleanser, the exfoliating acids have only brief contact with skin, so do not expect it to work like a leave-on BHA. What it genuinely does is keep rough, bumpy or 'grainy' skin — think keratosis pilaris on the arms, or congested body skin — a little smoother over time, while cleansing gently enough for daily use. It is fragrance-free and well tolerated. The caveats are minor: it is too mild to clear active acne on its own, and dry or sensitive facial skin may find even this light acid level unnecessary. As a gentle daily cleanser with a smoothing bonus — especially for the body — it is a solid, sensible pick.
