Gluconolactone
PHA acid with the gentlest action — gluconolactone exfoliates, hydrates, and strengthens the barrier simultaneously. An ideal alternative to AHA for sensitive skin: the effect is similar to glycolic, but without irritation and increased photosensitivity.
What is it?
Gluconolactone — a lactone of gluconic acid, belongs to the class of polyhydroxy acids (PHA). The large molecule (MW ~178 Da, compared to ~76 in glycolic) penetrates slowly and evenly, without peak irritation. It contains several hydroxyl groups — hence the dual action: chemical exfoliant + hygroscopic moisturizer. Naturally occurs in honey and fermented products.
The safest chemical exfoliant in cosmetics. Used in toners, serums, cleansers for sensitive and rosacea-prone skin. Can be combined with retinol, niacinamide, and most active ingredients.
