Effaclar Duo (+) is La Roche-Posay's attempt to treat active breakouts and the marks they leave in a single lightweight cream, and the formula is more thoughtful than most drugstore acne products. It pairs salicylic acid with capryloyl salicylic acid (LHA) — a lipophilic derivative that exfoliates more gently and stays in the pore longer — then adds a meaningful dose of niacinamide for barrier support and redness, zinc PCA for oil control, and piroctone olamine, an antifungal that helps with the malassezia component some breakouts have. The gel-cream base absorbs matte, layers under makeup, and is far less drying than benzoyl peroxide. Two honest caveats. First, it contains fragrance, which is an unnecessary irritation risk in a product aimed at inflamed skin — a real mark against it for sensitive users. Second, it is calibrated for mild to moderate breakouts and post-acne marks; cystic or persistent acne needs prescription treatment, not this. For everyday congestion, blackheads and the marks left behind, it is a well-built, reliable option.
