What is it?

Pentylene glycol (1,2-pentanediol) — synthetic or derived from plant sources five-carbon diol. In INCI: Pentylene Glycol. Structurally similar to butylene glycol, but with a longer carbon chain — hence better antimicrobial activity. Combines the functions of humectant, solvent, and preservative booster in one molecule.

Multifunctional component in toners, essences, serums, and creams. Acts as a moisturizer, enhances the penetration of actives, and protects the formula from microorganisms — especially effective against fungi and yeasts. A standard in K-beauty and European clean beauty formulas.

Key Benefits

Moisturization and light texture
Attracts and retains water in the stratum corneum — a mild humectant effect, comparable to butylene glycol. Provides formulas with lightness and quick absorption without a film or stickiness.
Antimicrobial protection of the formula
1,2-pentanediol effectively suppresses the growth of fungi, yeasts, and a range of bacteria. As a preservative booster, it allows for a reduction in the concentration of primary preservatives or replaces more controversial systems (parabens, phenoxyethanol).
Improvement of active penetration
Pentylene glycol enhances the perceptual barrier for active molecules — increases the bioavailability of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and peptides in water-based formulas.

Rare reactions on sensitive skin

Pentylene glycol is well tolerated, but in some people with very reactive skin, it may cause slight tingling at concentrations >5%. If the skin reacts to glycols in general — check patch test before first use.
