Beeswax
Classic natural wax from honeybee hives. It structures solid cosmetic products (lipsticks, balms, sunscreen sticks), provides a characteristic waxy texture, protects and moisturizes the skin. One of the oldest cosmetic ingredients.
What is it?
Beeswax is a complex mixture of fatty acid esters (~71%), paraffins (~15%), free fatty acids (~4%), and other compounds. Melting point: 62–65°C. INCI: Beeswax (Cera Alba — refined, Cera Flava — unrefined yellow). Cera Alba — bleached by treatment with hydrogen peroxide or sunlight. Natural antibacterial effect due to minor components (propolis). Forms a protective hydrophobic film on the skin. Stable at temperatures up to 60°C in the product. Vegan alternatives: candelilla wax or jojoba esters.
Lipsticks and balms, solid sunscreen sticks, cream blushes and bronzers, antiseptic ointments, and cream masks with a rich texture.
Key Benefits
Suitable for
Main Actions
For vegan cosmetics without beeswax: Candelilla Wax — the closest substitute, but harder (30–50% less needed). Carnauba Wax — very hard, shiny, used in smaller percentages than beeswax. Jojoba Esters — creamier feel, not as hard. Rice Bran Wax — neutral profile. One beeswax cannot be replaced by a single alternative — usually a blend of 2–3 waxes is needed to replicate characteristics.
