What is it?

Aspartic acid (аспарагінова кислота, Asp) — conditionally essential dicarboxylic amino acid. In INCI: Aspartic Acid. Part of the skin's NMF. Its dicarboxylic nature provides it with buffering properties in the weakly acidic pH range of the stratum corneum. It is a component of aspartame (artificial sweetener) — a natural amino acid, safe for cosmetics.

NMF-moisturizing active in complex amino acid formulas. Often present in products with Amino Acid Complex along with serine, glycine, and other NMF-amino acids.

Key Benefits

Moisturization and support of NMF
Aspartic acid is part of the natural amino acid pool of NMF and retains moisture in the stratum corneum. It restores the acidic pH of the stratum corneum after alkaline cleansing.
pH-buffering action
Dicarboxylic structure provides buffering capacity in the pH 3.5–5.5 — the optimal range for protective enzymes and the skin microbiome. It stabilizes the pH of the stratum corneum during fluctuations in the external environment.
Synergy in Amino Acid Complex
In combination with proline, lysine, glycine, and other NMF-amino acids — reproduces the natural amino acid profile of NMF, providing a better moisturizing and barrier-repair effect than individual components.
