What is it?

Taurine — a free sulfonic amino acid that is not incorporated into proteins. Molecular weight ~125 Da. Synthesized in the body from cysteine (and methionine). Functions in vivo: cell osmoregulation, conjugation of bile acids, neuromodulation, antioxidant protection. In the skin: part of NMF, concentrated in the epidermis. Functions in cosmetics: osmoprotectant (protects cells during dehydration), antioxidant (stabilizes membranes), anti-inflammatory action.

Products for sensitive and irritated skin, restorative creams after procedures, energizing serums for tired skin, shampoos and conditioners for weakened hair.

Key Benefits

Osmoregulation and protection of cells from stress
Taurine — the main organic osmolyte in skin cells: regulates cell volume with changes in osmotic pressure. During dehydration or UVB exposure, cells under osmotic stress: taurine stabilizes membranes, preventing cell death. Especially valuable in products for dry and dehydrated climates.
Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect
Taurine protects cells from reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hypochlorous acid (HOCl). Mechanism: formation of taurine-chloramine (Tau-Cl) — a milder oxidant that quenches HOCl and inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Result: reduction of redness and irritation when applied to irritated skin.
Strengthening hair and protection from damage
Studies have shown that taurine protects hair follicles from transforming growth factor (TGF-β1), which leads to hair growth cessation. Clinical data: taurine in vitro reduces TGF-β1-induced hair growth cycle arrest. Topical application in shampoos and hair serums: strengthening effect and reduction of brittleness.

Taurine and energy drinks — no connection

Taurine in Red Bull and energy drinks — the same compound as in cosmetics. However, the mechanism of "charging" in drinks is debatable, while in cosmetics it is quite different: osmoregulation and membrane stabilization. Taurine in cosmetics is obtained from synthesis (not from animal sources). For vegan brands: synthetic taurine is vegan. Natural (from animal bile) — no.
