Retinal (Retinaldehyde)

The direct precursor of retinoic acid — retinal (retinaldehyde) is 11 times more effective than retinol and is significantly gentler. One step to the active form (RA) without the slow enzymatic chain of retinol.

What is it?

Retinal (retinaldehyde, Vitamin A aldehyde) — an intermediate form of vitamin A between retinol and retinoic acid (RA). Conversion chain: retinol → retinal → retinoic acid (RA). RA — the active form that binds to RAR receptors. Retinal requires only one enzymatic step to RA (retinaldehyde dehydrogenase), unlike retinol (two steps). Result: higher bioavailability of RA with less irritation compared to direct RA (tretinoin). In INCI: Retinaldehyde or Retinal.

Serums and night products for anti-aging and acne. Effective in concentrations of 0.05–0.1%. Use in the evening, with SPF during the day. Brands: Darphin, Medik8, Naturium.

Key Benefits

11 times more effective than retinol with less irritation
Comparative study by Creidi et al.: retinal 0.05% > retinol 0.05% in terms of stimulating collagen synthesis and reducing wrinkles after 44 weeks of use. Smaller conversion "queue" — higher level of RA in tissues. But unlike direct RA (tretinoin), retinal has a buffered effect.
Stimulation of collagen, restoration of texture, and reduction of wrinkles; RA activates RAR receptors in fibroblasts → stimulation of pro-collagen I, III synthesis → increased density and elasticity. Simultaneously increases cellular turnover of the epidermis — smoother texture, smaller pores, even tone.
Antibacterial action in acne — unique to retinal
Retinal has a direct antibacterial effect against C. acnes unlike retinol. In vitro: retinal 0.005% completely inhibits the growth of C. acnes — the effect does not depend on conversion to RA. Double mechanism in acne: normalization of keratinization (via RA) + direct antibacterial action.

Retinoids: hierarchy of effectiveness

Retinyl palmitate < Retinol < Retinal < Retinoic acid (tretinoin, Rx). Retinal — the optimal balance: more effective than retinol, but does not require a prescription. Tretinoin — prescription, most effective, but causes the most irritation. For beginners with retinoids: retinol → then retinal. For experienced users — retinal as OTC maximum without Rx.
