Phosphatidylcholine
Phosphatidylcholine — the main phospholipid of cell membranes and a natural component of the skin barrier. It restores the lipid structure of the epidermis, increases the permeability of active ingredients, and is a key building material for liposomal delivery systems.
What is it?
Phosphatidylcholine (INCI: Lecithin, Phosphatidylcholine) — glycerophospholipid: diacylglycerol + phosphocholine head group. Composition: glycerin + two fatty acids (C16-C18, mainly linoleic and oleic) + phosphocholine. MW: ~760 Da. Amphiphilic molecule: hydrophilic phosphocholine head + hydrophobic fatty acid tails → self-organization into liposomes/bilayers. Main source: sunflower lecithin (non-GMO risk) or soy lecithin. Mechanism on skin: incorporation into the lipid barrier SC → restoration of damaged lamellar structure → reduction of TEWL.
