What is it?

Phosphatidylcholine (INCI: Lecithin, Phosphatidylcholine) — glycerophospholipid: diacylglycerol + phosphocholine head group. Composition: glycerin + two fatty acids (C16-C18, mainly linoleic and oleic) + phosphocholine. MW: ~760 Da. Amphiphilic molecule: hydrophilic phosphocholine head + hydrophobic fatty acid tails → self-organization into liposomes/bilayers. Main source: sunflower lecithin (non-GMO risk) or soy lecithin. Mechanism on skin: incorporation into the lipid barrier SC → restoration of damaged lamellar structure → reduction of TEWL.

Phosphatidylcholine is a structural analog of skin barrier lipids (along with ceramides and cholesterol). Upon application: phospholipid molecules integrate into lamellar structures between corneocytes → filling barrier defects. Result: restoration of TEWL indicators, improved hydration, reduced sensitivity. Especially effective for: atopic dermatitis, dry and dehydrated skin, post-procedure recovery (laser, peels). In vivo data: significant reduction of TEWL after 4 weeks of using a 5% PC cream in xerosis.

Phosphatidylcholine is a leading building material for liposomes — closed vesicles with an aqueous core surrounded by a phospholipid bilayer.
