What is it?

Papain - a proteolytic enzyme from unripe Carica Papaya fruits. It breaks down peptide bonds in the keratin of dead cells in the stratum corneum (but not in live cells). Effective at pH 6-7, activated at body temperature. In INCI: Papain or Carica Papaya Fruit Extract.

Used in enzyme masks and peels, exfoliating toners and essences, skin smoothing and renewal products. Often combined with bromelain and ficin in "fruit enzyme" complexes.
