Oat Extract
Colloidal oatmeal is the gold standard for soothing atopic dermatitis. Oat extract (Avena sativa) is FDA-approved as a skin protectant and is used in leading dermatological brands from Aveeno to CeraVe.
What is it?
Oat Extract (INCI: Avena Sativa Kernel Extract or Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour) — extract or flour from oat grains. Key active components: avenanthramides (antioxidant and anti-inflammatory alkaloids unique to oats), β-glucan (forms a protective film and moisturizes), avenin (protein), starch (occlusive). Colloidal oatmeal is especially finely ground for maximum absorption. The FDA approved it as an OTC skin protectant in 2003.
A base ingredient for sensitive and atopic skin. Aveeno (brand advocate), CeraVe, La Roche-Posay. Effective in creams, lotions, and bath products for dermatitis.
