Mandelic Acid
The gentlest AHA for brightening — mandelic acid from bitter almonds has a large molecule that penetrates slowly and eliminates the risk of irritation. The ideal acid for dark skin types, sensitive skin, and first encounters with chemical exfoliation.
What is it?
Mandelic acid (α-hydroxyphenylacetic acid) — the AHA acid with the largest molecule in the class (MW 152 Da, compared to 76 in glycolic). Large molecule: slow and even penetration — less peak irritation. Naturally found in bitter almonds (Prunus amygdalus). pKa = 3.41. Feature: antibacterial and brightening action combined — one acid solves two problems. Chiral: L-form and DL-mixture are used in cosmetics.
AHA for sensitive skin, dark skin types (Fitzpatrick III–VI), and beginners with chemical acids. Toners and serums 5–10%, peels 15–30%. Effective against acne + PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).
