What is it?

Mandelic acid (α-hydroxyphenylacetic acid) — the AHA acid with the largest molecule in the class (MW 152 Da, compared to 76 in glycolic). Large molecule: slow and even penetration — less peak irritation. Naturally found in bitter almonds (Prunus amygdalus). pKa = 3.41. Feature: antibacterial and brightening action combined — one acid solves two problems. Chiral: L-form and DL-mixture are used in cosmetics.

AHA for sensitive skin, dark skin types (Fitzpatrick III–VI), and beginners with chemical acids. Toners and serums 5–10%, peels 15–30%. Effective against acne + PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).

Key Benefits

Gentle exfoliation without hyperpigmentation — ideal for dark skin types. Glycolic acid (small molecule) penetrates quickly and can cause PIH in Fitzpatrick III–VI. Mandelic acid penetrates slowly — lower risk of post-inflammatory darkening. Recommended by dermatologists as a safe AHA exfoliant for tanned and dark skin.
Anti-acne and antibacterial action. Mandelic acid has a direct antibacterial effect against C. acnes and S. aureus (due to the benzene ring). Simultaneously normalizes follicular keratinization. Double mechanism against acne: AHA exfoliation + antibacterial action — a unique combination among AHAs.
Brightening pigmentation and evening out skin tone. Inhibits tyrosinase and keratinocyte-melanosome transfer of melanin. Effective against melasma, PIH, and age spots. With 10%-daily application — significant brightening of spots in 8 weeks without irritation. The effect is enhanced in combination with azelaic acid.

Almond vs Glycolic: which to choose?

Glycolic: the most powerful AHA effect, faster penetration, higher risk of irritation and PIH. Mandelic: slower penetration, gentler effect, ideal for dark and sensitive skin, plus antibacterial action. For beginners with acids or dark skin types — mandelic. For experienced users wanting maximum effect — glycolic.
