Lutein

Lutein — a carotenoid antioxidant found in leafy vegetables and marigold flowers. It protects the skin from oxidative stress and photodamage, especially effective in combination with zeaxanthin for synergistic protection against blue and UV light.

What is it?

Lutein (INCI: Lutein) — a fat-soluble carotenoid with a structure containing numerous conjugated double bonds, responsible for its yellow-orange color and antioxidant activity. Mechanism: effectively neutralizes singlet oxygen and free radicals generated by UV radiation and visible light (including blue light from screens). Additionally: lutein selectively accumulates in the lipid membranes of cells, providing protection to cellular structures from oxidative damage from within.

Antioxidant serums and creams, blue light protection products, anti-pollution formulas, products for skin exposed to prolonged screen time.

Key Benefits

Protection from blue light and visible radiation
Lutein demonstrates the ability to absorb and neutralize the effects of blue light (high-energy visible light, HEV) — radiation from digital device screens and partially from sunlight, which, according to some studies, may contribute to oxidative stress in the skin and pigmentation. Mechanism: the molecular structure of the carotenoid allows it to absorb light energy at certain wavelengths, dissipating it as heat instead of transferring it to reactive molecules in the cell. This makes lutein a relevant component in modern formulations for protection against "digital aging."
Antioxidant protection from oxidative stress
As a powerful carotenoid antioxidant, lutein effectively neutralizes free radicals and singlet oxygen generated by UV radiation, environmental pollution, and other sources of oxidative stress. Mechanism: the fat-soluble nature allows lutein to integrate into cell membranes, providing protection to lipid structures from peroxidation. Result: reduction of accumulated oxidative damage that contributes to premature skin aging.
Synergistic action with zeaxanthin
Lutein is often used together with its structural isomer zeaxanthin — the two carotenoids act synergistically, providing an extended spectrum of protection against different wavelengths of light. This combination is well-studied in the context of protecting the retina from blue light, and the cosmetic industry has adapted this principle for skin protection. Often combined with: vitamins C and E for enhanced antioxidant effect.

Lutein: origin and stability

Lutein is usually obtained from marigold flower extract (Tagetes erecta) through extraction and purification. Sensitive to light and oxidation — requires stabilization in the formula. INCI: Lutein. Concentration: 0.01-0.5% in antioxidant formulas.
