What is it?

Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate - sodium salt of hyaluronic acid, depolymerized to a molecular weight of <10 kDa (oligohyaluronate) or <5 kDa. Obtained by enzymatic (hyaluronidase) or chemical hydrolysis of standard Sodium Hyaluronate. Small MW → capable of penetrating through the stratum corneum (SC) to the epidermis and upper dermis. Unlike standard HA (MW ~1-2 MDa, remains on the surface) and cross-linked HA (remains in SC). Can interact with CD44 receptors on keratinocytes and fibroblasts → stimulates the body's own synthesis of HA.

Penetration into deep layers - hydration from within
Standard Sodium Hyaluronate (MW ~1 MDa) forms a moisturizing film on the skin's surface - excellent effect, but limited by the stratum corneum. Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate (MW <10 kDa) penetrates through SC to the living cells of the epidermis. Fluorescent labeling studies: HA fragments <5 kDa are found in the granular and spiny layers 24 hours after application. Deeper hydration → more stable moisture retention.
Stimulation of the body's own synthesis of hyaluronic acid
Small HA fragments interact with CD44 receptors on keratinocytes and fibroblasts as signaling molecules: activate HAS1, HAS2 genes (hyaluronate synthase) → cells increase their own production of HA. This fundamentally distinguishes hydrolyzed HA from a regular moisturizer: it not only 'fills' moisture reserves but enhances the skin's ability to retain it. The effect persists after discontinuation of the product.
Synergy with other forms of HA - multi-molecular HA
The most effective application - in combination with different molecular weights of HA: high MW (film-forming on the surface) + mid MW (SC hydration) + hydrolyzed low MW (deep penetration). Premium HA serums usually contain 3+ forms of HA.
