Humectant

Glutamic Acid

The most common amino acid in the natural moisturizing factor of the skin (NMF) — glutamic acid retains moisture and supports the optimal pH of the stratum corneum. It is also a precursor to polyglutamic acid and sodium PCA.

What is it?

Glutamic acid (глутамінова кислота, Glu) — aliphatic dicarboxylic amino acid. In INCI: Glutamic Acid. It is the dominant amino acid in the skin's NMF (~12% of the amino acid pool of NMF). Precursor to PCA (pyrrolidone carboxylic acid) — one of the most important NMF components. Naturally found in the skin and food products.

Moisturizing NMF component in serums, essences, and creams for dehydrated skin. Often combined with other amino acids (serine, glycine, alanine) to recreate the complete amino acid profile of NMF.

Key Benefits

Hydration through NMF restoration
Glutamic acid is a direct component of NMF — replenishes the natural amino acid supply of the stratum corneum, depleted by aggressive cleansing, retinol, or environmental factors.
pH-buffering action of the stratum corneum
The dicarboxylic nature of glutamic acid gives it buffering properties — maintains a slightly acidic pH of the stratum corneum (~5.5), optimal for protective enzymes and the skin microbiome.
Precursor to PCA and synergy with NMF formulas
Converts in the stratum corneum to PCA — one of the most powerful natural humectants. In complex NMF serums, it is a key "building" molecule for recreating the natural moisturizing factor.
