What is it?

French Green Clay (INCI: Illite) — a clay mineral from the group of layered silicates (phyllosilicates), similar to montmorillonite. Structure: plate-like crystals with a negative surface charge → high cation exchange capacity (CEC) and absorption ability. Mineral composition: oxides of iron and magnesium, calcium, silicon, aluminum, copper, zinc, selenium. Mechanism: negatively charged clay particles attract and bind positively charged toxins, excess sebum, and impurities from the skin surface; high surface area → effective physical adsorption. Upon drying: a tightening effect on pores (temporary narrowing).

Masks for oily and problematic skin, cleansers for enlarged pores, detox masks, spa cosmetics, and wraps.

Key Benefits

Sebum absorption and deep pore cleansing
French green clay — one of the most effective natural sebum absorbers due to its high cation exchange capacity and surface area of particles. Mechanism: the negatively charged surface of the clay attracts excess sebum, impurities, and makeup residues from pores → physical removal when rinsing the mask. Result: noticeable reduction in the visibility of pores (temporary effect), reduction of oily shine, cleansing from comedones and impurities. Especially effective for: oily skin, acne-prone skin, T-zone. Traditional use in French spa cosmetics for centuries.
Mineral remineralization nourishment
French green clay is rich in trace elements (copper, zinc, selenium, magnesium, calcium), which can partially be released upon contact with moist skin. Zinc: supports sebum control and has a mild anti-inflammatory effect (relevant for acne-prone skin). Copper: cofactor of lysyl oxidase (collagen synthesis enzyme) — theoretical support for dermal structure. Magnesium: overall support for cellular metabolism. Although the penetration of minerals from clay is limited, it is traditionally believed that the remineralization effect contributes to the overall tone and health of the skin in spa practice.
Gentle detoxification and control of T-zone oiliness
French green clay is traditionally used for detox masks that cleanse the skin of accumulated toxins and urban environmental pollutants. Mechanism: physical adsorption of pollution particles (PM2.5, heavy metals from the atmosphere) on the surface of the clay. Oiliness control: regular use (1-2 times a week) helps normalize sebum production in oily and combination skin without excessive drying (unlike more aggressive absorbers). Textural effect: noticeably mattifying and refreshing action immediately after applying the mask.

French Green Clay: application and caution

French green clay (illite) can dry out the skin with excessive use — recommended 1-2 times a week for oily/combination skin, not for dry and sensitive skin without a moisturizing balance. INCI: Illite (sometimes referred to as Montmorillonite). Do not apply a completely dry mask for long (>15 min) — increases dryness. Always finish with a moisturizing cream after the mask.
