What is it?

Dimethyl Sulfone (INCI: Dimethyl Sulfone, also MSM = methylsulfonylmethane) — (CH₃)₂SO₂. Molecular weight ~94 Da. Well soluble in water. Natural source: product of DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) oxidation in the atmosphere. In the body: source of organic sulfur for synthesis: cysteine → keratin, collagen, glutathione, taurine. Mechanisms of action in cosmetics: 1) Supply of sulfur for keratin → strengthening hair and nails; 2) Anti-inflammatory activity (inhibition of NF-κB); 3) Antioxidant (precursor of glutathione); 4) Improvement of cell membrane permeability.

Products for strengthening and hair growth, nail strengthening products, anti-inflammatory creams and masks, anti-aging formulas supporting collagen synthesis.

Key Benefits

Source of organic sulfur — strengthening keratin and collagen
Sulfur is a key element of disulfide bonds in keratin (S-S bridges between chains → mechanical strength of hair and nails) and in collagen (stabilization of structure). Dimethyl sulfone is the most bioavailable form of organic sulfur for cosmetic use. Topical application in hair products: strengthening the hair shaft, reducing brittleness. Synergy with cysteine, methionine, and biotin.
Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action
MSM (dimethyl sulfone) inhibits NF-κB and reduces levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α). Antioxidant effect: through increased intracellular levels of glutathione (GSH) → stronger protection against ROS. Clinical studies of oral MSM intake: reduction of joint inflammation. Topically: reduction of redness and irritation in inflammatory skin diseases (rosacea, dermatitis).
Improvement of skin health and elasticity
Studies on topical application of MSM (16-week RCT): significant improvement in skin elasticity, reduction of wrinkle depth, and improvement of texture compared to placebo. Mechanism: sulfur → synthesis of new collagen and elastin → denser dermis. Additionally: improvement of barrier function through support of keratin in the stratum corneum.

Main Actions

✓ supply of sulfur for keratin and collagen✓ anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect✓ strengthening the structure of skin and hair
MSM: orally vs topically

Orally (MSM supplements): well-researched, effects on joints and hair confirmed. Topically: less evidence base, but there are RCTs with positive results. In cosmetics INCI: 'Dimethyl Sulfone' (not 'MSM'). Concentrations in topical formulas: 1–5%. Stable, does not oxidize. Well soluble in water and alcohol. Odorless in pure form (unlike DMSO). Suitable for vegan formulas.
