Cetyl Esters
Synthetic analog of spermaceti — esters of cetyl alcohol with fatty acids. Provides cosmetic products with a luxurious fatty silkiness, characteristic of premium creams and balms. An ethical substitute for animal-derived components.
What is it?
Cetyl Esters — INCI for synthetic waxes, which is a mixture of esters of fatty alcohols (mainly cetyl, C16) with fatty acids (myristic, palmitic, stearic). Formulated as an analog of spermaceti — a wax that was previously obtained from sperm whales (now banned). Melting point: 43–47°C → melts upon contact with skin. State at room temperature: solid crystalline wax. Obtained from plant sources (coconut, palm oil) + cetyl alcohol. Functions: emollient, structuring agent, viscosity regulator.
Premium cream moisturizers and night creams, lip balms and sticks, body mask cosmetics and lifting effect, colorful lipsticks and cream pencils.

True spermaceti (Spermaceti) — from the head of a sperm whale, mainly cetyl palmitate. Cetyl Esters — a synthetic mixture of esters C14-C18. Functionally identical. Cetyl Palmitate — a separate compound (one ester), cetyl esters — a mixture. For vegan labeling: cetyl esters of plant origin are considered vegan. Look for "derived from coconut/palm" in INCI declarations for confirmation of origin.
