Benzyl Alcohol
A preservative with a controversial reputation — benzyl alcohol effectively prevents bacterial contamination but is also a registered allergen in the EU and can occur as a natural aromatic component in essential oils.
What is it?
Benzyl Alcohol (INCI: Benzyl Alcohol) — aromatic alcohol (C₆H₅CH₂OH). Role in cosmetics: 1) preservative — effective against bacteria and yeasts; 2) solvent — for essential oils and fragrance components; 3) aromatic component — naturally found in jasmine, ylang-ylang, tuberose. Maximum allowed EU-Annex V: 1% (preservative). Mandatory EU declaration (Annex III allergen) when thresholds are exceeded.
Preservative system at pH 4–8. Often combined with caprylyl glycol or hydroxyacetophenone. Also used in fragrance compositions as a natural component.

Main Actions
The EU requires benzyl alcohol to be listed on the packaging if it exceeds 0.001% in rinse-off products or 0.0001% in leave-on products. This does NOT mean it is dangerous for everyone — allergy is specific and occurs in ~1-2% of the population. If you have sensitive skin or a reaction to fragrances — look for 'fragrance-free' and check for the presence of benzyl alcohol.
