Bakuchiol

Plant-based alternative to retinol without irritation — bakuchiol activates the same receptors as retinol, stimulates collagen synthesis, and reduces wrinkles, but does not cause the "retinol effect" — peeling, redness, and photosensitivity. Ideal for pregnant women and sensitive skin.

What is it?

Bakuchiol — a monoterpenophenol extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia (bakuchi). Structurally different from retinol, but exhibits retinoid functionality: activates RARα, RARβ, and RXR receptors — the same targets as retinol. Unlike retinol, it is not a xenobiotic — chemically related to natural phytochemicals in the skin. Stable in air and light — can be used during the day.

Retinol alternative for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those who cannot tolerate retinol. Effective in concentrations of 0.5–1%. Can be combined with most actives, including AHA and vitamin C.

Key Benefits

Retinoid action without irritation
Comparative clinical study by Dhaliwal et al. (BJD, 2019): bakuchiol 0.5% twice a day vs retinol 0.5% once in the evening — equal reduction of wrinkles and pigmentation after 12 weeks. But bakuchiol: less peeling, redness, dryness, and feeling of heat. Retinol showed more pronounced side effects.
Stimulation of collagen synthesis and increased elasticity
Activates retinoid receptors in fibroblasts, stimulating procollagen I and III. Transcriptional analysis shows that bakuchiol regulates the same genes as retinol (COL1A1, COL3A1, FN1). Increased skin density and elasticity after a 12-week course.
Safety during pregnancy and compatibility with light
Retinoids are contraindicated during pregnancy (teratogenic risk). Bakuchiol — a safe alternative, dermatologist-approved for pregnant women. Stable under UV exposure — can be used in the morning, unlike retinol.

Bakuchiol vs Retinol: which to choose?

Retinol remains the gold standard for anti-aging — more clinical data, stronger effect at higher concentrations. Bakuchiol — for those who cannot tolerate retinol, pregnant women, and reactive skin. Can be combined: some formulas contain bakuchiol + retinol in low concentration for synergy with minimal irritation.
