What is it?

Allantoin (5-ureidohydantoin) is a natural compound found in the root of comfrey (Symphytum officinale), beet juice, and the urine of many mammals. It is synthesized in industry from glyoxylic acid and urea. It is well soluble in water, stable in formulas with a pH of 3–8. It is used in concentrations of 0.1–2%. It is on the FDA's list of approved skin protectants.

A basic component of products for sensitive, irritated, and dry skin. Widely used in aftershave products, for babies, and in dermatological cosmetics. Considered one of the safest cosmetic ingredients.

Key Benefits

Acceleration of cell renewal and softening
Allantoin accelerates desquamation — the exfoliation of dead corneocytes — by dissolving keratin. The keratolytic effect at low concentrations (0.2–0.5%) is milder than that of AHA but noticeable: the skin becomes smoother and softer. Traditionally used for calluses and rough skin.
Soothing and reducing irritation
Reduces the sensitivity of nerve endings in the skin (counter-irritant effect) and inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators. Effective for contact dermatitis, irritation after shaving, and sunburns. Works well with other soothing ingredients (panthenol, bisabolol).
Hydration and barrier restoration
Acts as a humectant — attracting water — and occlusive, reducing TEWL. Supports the integrity of the stratum corneum, accelerating its recovery after damage. FDA approved as a skin protectant in concentrations of 0.5–2%.

Natural or synthetic?

Most allantoin in cosmetics is of synthetic origin (glyoxylic acid + urea), which does not mean lower quality. Synthetic allantoin is chemically identical to natural allantoin but is more stable and cheaper to produce. Vegans avoid allantoin from animal sources — check for the vegan label on the product.
